If the Downton Abbey film is to be believed, the royal family visited the Crawley’s country home in Yorkshire in 1927. This, of course, is fiction.

But it is a fact that ten years later, Queen Mary, her daughter the Princess Royal and her son-in-law Henry Lascelles did indeed visit a large country house in Yorkshire; Grantley Grange near Ripon.

They had been staying at nearby Harewood House (used as a location for the Downton Abbey film) and called-in on Harry Lawrence Bradfer-Lawrence, antiquarian and land agent.

This visitor’s book is signed by the two royals and Lascelles (“Harewood”). Other signatories include Lady Blanche Gordon-Lennox, mother of Princess Mary’s bridesmaid; Cynthia Coalville, woman of the bedchamber and sir Owen Morshead, royal librarian.

The book contains 21 pages of signatures as can be seen in the above pictures.
